3 Spring Girls and upcoming items

Good morning dear readers!

I want to share with you the pictures of my sweet girls over at Olde Primitive Peddlers--they are exclusive to OPP, and that is the only place you will find them, but they are just soo sweet, I wanted to share them with you!

First is Emma--I just love her! She is just sooo sweet, and very old fashioned-- I think! Raw wool hair, button eyes and a pinch stitched nose, a sweet little dress of cabbage roses and she is holding a stuffed heart in her lap. Sweet for Valentine's Day and I think perfect for spring and even year round!

Next is Pepper Anne--a confection in pink, pink and more pink! She is made from a pattern by Chestnut Junction and has pink wool hair, a little pink nose, and wearing a pink and white print dress. She is holding a little heart as well! I think she would be perfect for a tween daughter, or someone who just LOVES pink. Very sweet! She REALLY reminds me of Peppermint Patty from Charlie Brown!

Last, but certainly not least, is Raggedy, a little girl who looks like she was well loved and carefully tucked away for safe keeping. She has raveled red wool hair, and is dressed in a simple dress made from a ticking type fabric and has top stitching done in black perle cotton. Very cute!

On to what's coming up! Just finished up a sizable order and it is off to the post office--yeah! I am also wrapping up Valentine's Day items, and I am moving on to Easter and St. Patrick's Day. Shamrocks and Leprechauns are the theme of the day! I am working on candle mats with both for St. Patrick's Day , as well as some ornies! Now Easter, I am really excited about! I can hardly wait to get started on those items! Bunny nodders, Peter Rabbit, stitched eggs... I think I am going to have to get going on them this week! I will post pictures as I get things going! Talking about going, I need to get going on what I told you about!

New Listing and how my hubby and I met :o)

Good Evening (or is it very early morning??) Dear Readers!

I just wanted to share with you my new listing on The Olde Primitive Peddler! They will be live after midnight (PST) tonight! I have listed 3 new dollies, just in time for Valentine's Day! Sweet little Pepper Anne, who I think strikes a resemblance to a certain little girl who had a crush on Charlie Brown, Emma, who is quite proper and cute, and Raggedy, who reminds me of a little doll tucked away in a chest to remember the lost days of childhood... be sure to pop on over and see my dolls and all the other lovelies by all the other artisans!

ALSO, I am a new member of the Handmade Art Faire as well! Click on the button there on the right and take a peak at all the wonderful items and artisans there as well! I have one of my candle mats mentioned there! SO much fun, and I am truly honored to be among such wonderful artists!

OK! I realized that after posting my giveaway, and asking you to share how you met the love of your life, I realized I neglected to share how my hubby and I met!

We were in the same History class and I guess he had been watching me, and well I had been taking peeks at him, and one morning, as I was walking towards the class, I saw him waiting outside the door, nose buried in a book, hair in his eyes, I even remember what he was wearing! I just stopped and this feeling came over me that I KNEW I was going to marry him one day. Well, that very day, we were going to watch the old Clash of the Titans in class, on VHS (does anyone remember what those were?? LOL) and he sat down next to me since my desk was closest to the tv, and the class was crowding around. As we sat there, waiting for class and the movie to start, he pulled out a manilla folder and took out a piece of paper, making a big deal about it, and I saw that it was a Dungeons and Dragons character sheet. I took a look at it and he saw me, and he took a deep breath and started to rattle off what everything meant on the page, and I said, ya, I know, I play. You could have knocked him over with a feather! He said you have to come play with me and my friends at lunch! He was shocked and pleasantly surprised, because back then, there were very few girl gamers. Well, the rest is history... we went together for nearly 2 years in High School, and then life happened, and we went our separate ways. While we ran into each other again over the years, we never really seemed to be in the same place at the same time. I realized that I hadn't gotten over him, but he wasn't really ready, so off I went. I got married, he went in the Marines. My marriage fell apart, I moved out of state and after a while I got to thinking about him. I tracked down his mom and she gave me his contact info, and after getting the courage together, I called him. We got together and visited and over the next 8 years, we reformed our friendship, fell in love again all over and then he asked me what I was doing for my summer vacation 8 years ago. I said enjoying it, and he wanted to know if I wanted to move to where he was, and I said are we getting married, and he replied, I guess so! Well, come this June, we will have been married for 8 years, and I love him so much! We have 3 kids, mine, his and ours and we are so happy, happier then we ever thought we would be, and it is just perfect, and I guess my feeling that we were going to get married came true!

Valentine Day Giveaway

Hello Dear Readers!

Yes! I am having my first giveaway of the new year! I had so much fun with the cutter quilt stars at Christmas time, I thought I would do one for Valentine's Day. For this giveaway, I am doing a pair of Cutter Quilt Hearts--I cut the hearts from cutter quilt blocks that I made, did a blanket stitch around the raw edges and then crocheted a simple edging around the heart. I then tea stained them and stitched them to tea stained Onasburg hearts. On the front there are rusty pins with little round labels, one with the sentiment of 'Love U' and the other with 'XO XO'. I love how they turned out, and here they are!! Aren't they DARLING??

Weekend WIPs

Hello Dear Readers!

I have been wanting to sit down a spell and write, but we have had a rather nasty cold run thru the house, and our Little Man was very sick and actually ended up in the Emergency room at 4 am on a Sunday morning with an ear infection!! Poor baby!! He started fussing about 7pm and when he fell asleep, he only slept for an hour, would wake up and cry for 20 minutes, fall asleep and repeat. When he woke up at 3:30ish, we tried a bottle and he just cried and cried. Since this wasn't his normal self, we decided to bundle us all up and off we went. Luckily, Walgreen's are open on Sundays, and we were able to get his prescription filled and he started to get on the mend! He is doing better now, and with my sewing area reorganized, he is just being his little man self! He loves the cubbies in my sewing cabinet, so we are putting toys in the lower ones and his FAVORITE thing of ALL is to go thru my fabric box and pull out many pieces of fabric and help me sort!

In between taking care of sick kiddos and sick husband, I have been working on some spring time and Valentine goodies. A couple dolls, that I am pretty happy with :-) and some stitcheries that I am pretty tickled about! I have also been working on cutter quilt hearts, since my stars were such a big hit. This time though, I have done a blanket stitch around the edges of the hearts and crocheted simple lace to spiffy them up for spring and Valentine's Day.

This time around, I am working on wall hangings and candle mats instead of pillows, since my pillows are languishing. The wall hangings are done from designs by Chestnut Junction, and the candle mats are from Primitive Stitches. And here is one of my cutter quilt hearts! Isn't it cute?? Not tea dyed yet, but I think it will be adorable when it is! The large hearts I am going to be stitching it to will be made out of onasburg, rather than the striped ticking that the stars are made from... what do you think??

And here are my two dolls along with one of my large bunnies!

So I have been busy while taking care of sickies, and escaping mostly unscathed myself! One happy bit of news is that I have been accepted by Handmade Art Fair, another juried site, so I am really really excited about that! Be sure to go by and take a look at all the marvelous artists I am blessed to be with, AND just found out today that Olde Primitive Peddler is going to be adding a Christmas and Halloween site, so stay tuned for my involvement in that!! I am thinking about joining the Christmas site, since I love love love Christmas, and I have so many fun Christmas goodies to share, it is a shame to keep them just for one little bit of the year.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you, my dear readers and friends! Welcome to 2012 and I want to thank all of you for following along with me! All of your are very important to me and I am just tickled when I see how many people stop by to read my writings! And the response I got to the 12 days of Christmas Cookies was fantastic, and I have another Christmas recipe grouping in the works!

The last quarter of 2011 was fantastic, and I am looking forward to a fantastic 2012 and I am so glad you are coming along with me! I have lots of fun new items in store, I am going to get my selling blog up and running, I have my page at the Olde Primitive Peddlers that I am just thrilled about. I have some darling Valentine's themed dolls that are in their finishing stages that I plan to have up on both Etsy and my selling blog. My plan is, to have one set of dolls on Etsy, and a different set on my selling blog! They are just darling and I am just so tickled with how cute they are!

On the home front, we are busy reorganizing our living/family room into a multi purpose room, where I can sew, rather than in our room. Mainly, this is because Little Man is much more active--as 9 month olds typically are!--and so we are combining his play area with my work area so I can sew more, and he won't be trapped in a small area in the master bedroom. I think this will enable me to get more work done and be more creative and have more time with LM to boot! Our goal, eventually, will be to move into a bigger house, with a bonus room, where I can work, and LM can have his play room. I am really excited by the prospects!!

Stay tuned as well for more giveaways too! I have one in the works right now, that I am planning on getting up in the next few weeks! It will be a Valentine/Spring themed one!!

Days 11 and 12 of the 12 Days of Christmas Cookies!

Well, my dear reader, today is the last day of our 12 days of Christmas Cookies. Was really busy yesterday and it was late, very late in the day when I realized I hadn't done my blog! Horrors! So I decided to combine it with today's cookies and have a big blow out.

Going through my mom's recipe box, I found this first cookie. I don't remember ever making it, but I got a chuckle from a note about one ingredient, so I thought I would include it, along with the comment. I am pretty sure this is another of my Grandmother's recipes, due to the fact that it is typed out on an index card.

Fruit Cake Cookies

1/2 lb citron, chopped

1 lb dates, cut crosswise 3 or 4 times

1 lb cherries, chopped

1 lb pineapple, chopped

3 cups flour

4 eggs

6 cups nuts, or less

1/2 lb white raisins

1/2 lb butter

1 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1 teaspoons baking soda dissolved in 3 Tablespoons sweet milk

1 fruit juice glass of Brandy or Wine (Mrs. Conder used Brandy)

Cream butter, sugar, and egg yolks. Sift spices with flour and put 1 cup flour mixture over fruit and nuts. Combine brandy, milk and soda. Add alternately dry and liquid ingredients. Add fruit and nuts to batter. Finally fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Drop on cookie sheet and bake about 20 minutes at 300*. These cookies keep well and can be baked ahead of the Christmas rush.

I can just see my Grandmother, sitting in her kitchen with a neighbor sharing recipes at the holidays and making a note such as Mrs. Conder used Brandy on the recipe for future reference. Who was Mrs. Conder? Was she the neighbor she shared recipes with? A relative? A distant family member? Who knows, I surely don't, but I think it adds a bit of history to these cookies. I can imagine with all of the dried fruit this had to be an expensive recipe to make, so was it post WWII? A recipe to celebrate good times returning? Would be interesting to know!

Lacy Swedish Almond Wafers

Cook and stir until smooth: 1 cup butter or margarine, 1/2 cup sugar, 3 Tablespoons flour, 2 Tablespoons milk, 1/8 teaspoon salt. Then add 1/2 cup finely chopped toasted blanched almonds. Drop by level Tablespoons onto lightly greased AND floured cookie sheet, about 4 inches apart. Place only 4 to 6 cookies at one time on a cooky sheet. Bake in 350* oven 6 to 8 minutes, until lightly browned. Cool slightly on baking sheet. Carefully lift with wide spatula and place over broomstick to shape. Cool. If cookies harden before removing from cooky sheet, return to oven for a few seconds to soften. Makes 18 (4 to 5 inch) cookies. Remember to grease and flour cookie sheet each time you bake.

I remember these, and it was not pretty when we made them, because they just broke apart trying to get off the cookie sheet... but they were sure tasty! If they shatter on you, sprinkle over fruit or ice cream! I think since I have a lot more baking experience now then when we first tried them, I might have better luck... maybe even get some of the metal cones to shape them with instead of a broomstick.

Cheese Kiffles

2 cups sifted flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 lb butter

1 small carton cottage cheese

Mix together with hands into smooth ball, creamy, not sticky. Divide into 2 pieces--roll in waxed paper--refrigerate overnight. Roll out like pie dough on floured waxed paper. Cut into 3 1/2 inch squares. Sprinkle with cinnamon. On each square put 1/4 walnut and 1/2 teaspoon Pineapple-Apricot preserves. Fold over into a triangle. Squeeze edges together. Bake at 375* 15 minutes or until brown. Cool. Roll in powdered sugar.

Pecan Caramel Bars

2/3 cup butter or margarine

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1 1/2 cup flour

28 Kraft Caramels

1/4 cup water

1/4 cup butter or margarine

2 eggs, beaten

1/4 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup chopped pecans

Cream butter or margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. Add flour; mix well. Press dough onto bottom of a 13x9 inch baking pan. Bake at 375* for 15 minutes. Melt caramels with water and butter in saucepan over low heat; stir occasionally until smooth. Combine eggs, sugar, vanilla and salt. Gradually add caramel sauce; mix well. Stir in pecans. Pour over crust. Continue baking for 15 minutes. Cool, cut into bars.

Lemon Snowballs

Mix together-- 1/2 cup soft shortening or butter

2/3 cup sugar

2 teaspoons grated lemon rind

1 egg

Stir in--3 Tablespoons strained lemon juice

1 Tablespoons water

Sift and stir in--1 3/4 cups sifted flour

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar

Stir in--1/2 cup finally chopped nuts.

Flour hands and form dough into balls the size of small walnuts. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cooky sheet. Bake at 350 for 10-15 minutes. Roll immediately in powdered sugar.

Day 10 of the 12 Days of Christmas Cookies!

Wow! Can you believe it?? Only 2 more days of cookie recipes and Christmas is coming quickly behind! 2 more family favorites--one of which is another of my grandmother's recipes for soft sugar cookies, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. Sooo good!

Soft Sugar Cookies

1/2 cup butter or margarine

1 1/2 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

3 cups sifted flour

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 cup sour cream

cinnamon-sugar

Cream butter to consistency of mayonnaise; add sugar gradually, while continuing to cream the butter. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla. Beat until light and fluffy. Mix and sift flour, salt, baking powder and soda. add to creamed mixture alternately with sour cream, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. For 3 inch cookies, drop by heaping teaspoons on well greased cookie sheets, well apart. With spatula, flatten into circles about 2 inches in diameter. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake in hot oven, 400* for 10 to 12 minutes. Makes about 30 3 inch cookies.

Chocolate Sugar Cookie Variation

Add 2 squares (2oz) unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled, to creamed mixture. Continue as above.

Here is another wonderful no bake Christmas cookie that is wonderful for last minute 'baking'. I loved rolling these in chopped nuts, colored sugar or decorattes. Sooo festive and wonderfully fudge-y. And yet another reason why Nilla wafers exist!!

Chocolate Nuggets

1. Stir 6 oz package Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips (1 cup) in a 2 quart bowl over hot (not boiling) water until melted. Take from water.

2. Stir in 3 tablespoons corn syrup and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Stir in gradually 1/2 cup Pet Evaporated Milk, then 1/2 cup powdered sugar; then 2 1/2 cups vanilla wafer crumbs (1/2 pound) and 1 cup finely chopped nuts. Mix well.

3. Let stand about 30 minutes. Then shape into 1-inch balls and roll in about 3/4 cup chocolate decorattes, colored sugars or finely cut nuts. Chill. Makes about 4 1/2 dozen

Truly, sharing these recipes with you really brings back a lot of memories from when I was young, and helping my mom get ready for Christmas. I remember standing in the kitchen helping her and her telling me stories from when she was young and in order to make cookies, and how to wash and clean as you go, so you don't have a kitchen sink FULL of dishes when you are done with a whole days worth of baking and then having to turn around and make dinner. I really miss my mom and those days.

A weekend of Christmas Cookies!

Greetings dear readers!

Yes, I was bad! I caved to the holiday rush and I missed both Friday and Saturday's cookies, so I have decided to have a extravaganza of cookies today... count them 6!!! Recipes and for baring with me, a couple of candy recipes! I also have to share with you the absolutely DARLING ornaments that I got in the PAFA swap! My partner Barb, from Heartstrokes, sent me two adorable ornaments--a painted snowman and a big jingle bell! I love them so much and truth be told, I have always wanted one of those big bells!

Aren't they cute??? so they are happily joining all my other ornies on our tree and will have a special place there! Thank you again sooo much Barb!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!! for being my swap partner--it was wonderful getting to know you!!

On to cookies and other goodies!

Coconut Balls

1 cup butter or margarine, softened

1/4 cup sifted confectioners' sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla

1 Tablespoon water

2 cups sifted enriched flour

1 cup chopped pecans

Thoroughly cream butter, sugar, and vanilla. Stir in water. Add the flour and mix well. Stir in nuts. Shape in 1-inch balls. Bake 1 inch apart on ungreased cooky sheet at 300* about 20 minutes, or till firm to touch. Cool thoroughly before removing from pan. Dip cookies in Confectioners' Frosting and roll in tinted coconut. Makes 4 dozen.

Confectioners' Frosting

Add enough light cream to 2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar to make of spreading consistency (or less cream to make of piping consistency). Add dash of salt and 1 teaspoon vanilla.

These cookies I believe are from my paternal Grandmother, since they are typed on an index card, and hers always were! These sound sooo yummy! I can just see them, nestled on one of the tiered display dishes all prim and proper with light green and pale pink tinted coconut... hmmm I think I may have to whip up a batch before Christmas myself!!

Another family favorite--Russian Teacakes... I know these are known by many names, but they all mean yummy in my book! We would make snowdrifts of these--or at least it seemed that we did--and grab them off the hot cookie sheets and into brown paper lunch sacks full of confectioners sugar they would go! Then when they would cool, be re rolled so they are lovely and white, and no finger prints!

Russian Teacakes

1 cup butter or margarine

1/2 sifted confectioners' sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 1/4 cups flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup finely chopped walnuts

Mix butter, sugar, and vanilla thoroughly. Sift together flour and salt; blend in. Mix in nuts. Chill dough. Heat oven to 400* (medium hot). Roll the dough into 1-inch balls. Place on ungreased baking sheet. (Cookies do not spread). Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until set but not brown. While still warm, roll in confectioners. sugar. Cool. Roll in sugar again. Makes about 4 dozen 1 inch cookies.

Here is another yummy one, and one just perfect for those stressful pre Christmas shopping days! Bourbon Balls! yummy and need to be made before Christmas so they can ferment for a while.. and be sure to make extras for 'testing' to make sure they are ready for the cookie trays!! These are also why Nilla wafers exist!

Bourbon Balls

2 1/2 cups or 1 12 oz package finely crushed vanilla wafers

1 cup powdered sugar

1 cup chopped walnuts

2 Tablespoons cocoa powder

1/3 cup bourbon

3 Tablespoons corn syrup

Combine all ingredients thoroughly. With hands, roll mixture into 1 inch balls and then into granulated sugar. Makes 36.

Quick, simple and oh so good. Also, a great way to work out stress, with crushing the vanilla wafers. We always found a ziplock to be a good bag to use and a rolling pin when crushing the wafers. Much easier than crushing by hand.

So, 3 cookie recipes, so I think 3 candied nut recipes to go with!

Candy Coated Nuts

Butter sides of heavy 1 quart saucepan. In pot mix 1 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup sour cream. Stir until sugars melt. Cook to soft ball stage. (236*)

Add 1 teaspoon vanilla, heat until mixture begins to thicken. Add 2 1/2 cups walnuts, pecan halves or filberts, stir until well coated. Turn out on a greased platter or cooky sheet; separate at once into individual pieces.

Makes 1 pound

Sugared Walnuts

Heat 2 1/2 cups walnut halves (or filberts) on 370* for 5 minutes, stirring once. Butter sides of heavy 2 quart saucepan. In pot combine 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoons salt, dash of cloves and nutmeg. heat and stir until sugar disolves and mixture boils cook without stirring to soft ball stage (236*). Remove from heat. Beat by hand 1 minute or until mixture just begins to get creamy. Add 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla and the warm nuts. Stir until nuts are well coated and mixture becomes creamy. Turn out on buttered platter or cookie sheet. Separate at once using 2 spoons or forks. Makes about 1 pound of crunchy sugared walnuts.

Crystallized Nuts

1 1/4 cup golden brown sugar, packed

1/4 cup cream

1 tablespoon butter or margarine

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 cups whole walnut halves or almonds

Combine sugar, cream, butter, cinnamon and salt in a 2 quart saucepan. Mix well. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook to firm ball stage, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add vanilla and nuts. Continue stirring until candy coats nuts. Spread on greased cookie sheet to cool. Makes about 1 1/4 pounds.

Can you believe that Christmas is a week from today?? EKK!! Where has the year gone... I just don't know! I wish I had more time--but I really do love this time of year. Tree is all decorated, house too, and I am going to finish up my shopping and wrapping here on Monday or Tuesday, and then sit back and enjoy! Just 3 days of cookies left and I am already contemplating next year-the 12 days of holiday breads perhaps?? I am a baker by trade so we shall see--anything is possible! Day 6 of the 12 Days of Christmas Cookies

WOW... I can not believe we are have half way through the 12 days of Christmas Cookies! Here are a couple more favorites--Coconut Snowballs (yum!) and Swedish Nuts (kk we are all a bit crazy!)

Coconut Snowballs

1 cup softened butter or margarine

Granulated sugar

2 egg

1 teaspoon vanila extract

5 cups sifted flour

1 teaspoon soda

2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup sour cream

1 cup flaked coconut

colored sugar

Cream butter and 2 cups granulated sugar until light. Add eggs and vanilla and beat well. Add sifted dry ingredients, sour cream and coconut; mix well. Chill several hours. Shape in 1-inch balls and sprinkle with colored sugar. Put on cooky sheets (ungreased) and bake in moderate oven (375*) about 10 minutes. Make about 6 dozen.

Swedish Nuts

1/2 lb (1 1/2) cups blanched almonds

1/2lb (2 cups) walnut halves

1 cup sugar

dash salt

2 stiff beaten egg whites

1/2 cup butter or margerine

Toast almonds and walnuts in a slow oven (325*) until light brown. Fold sugar and salt into egg whites. Beat until stiff peaks form. Fold nuts into meringue. Melt butter in a jelly roll pan (15 1/2" x 10 1/2") spread nut mixture over butter. Bake in slow oven (325*) about 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes, or until nuts are coated with a brown covering and no butter remains in the pan. Cool; makes about 4 cups. **This is another yummy one that bears making more than one batch! very addicting**

Day 5 of the 12 days of Christmas Cookies!!

Hello again dear reader! Today I rummaged thru the recipe box again and found some more family favorites! This one was one of my very favorites! Dainty Date Squares! Light, airy, and oh so truly dainty! My grandmother would store them in coffee tins and they would take on the slightest flavor of coffee and I always felt so grown up when I was able to have them. Made me feel like I needed a doily on my plate and I should be wearing white gloves!

Dainty Date Squares

1/2 cup sifted all purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon double action baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup shortening

1/2 cup sugar

1 egg, beaten

1 cup chopped pitted dates

1/4 cup chopped walnuts

Confectioners sugar

Sift flour, measure, and re sift 3 times with baking powder and salt. Cream the shortening and sugar together, add beaten egg and beat well. Add flour mixture in 3 portions, mixing well after each addition. Stir in chopped dates and walnuts. Turn mixture into a greased 8 inch square baking pan. Bake in a slow moderate oven (325*) for about 50 minutes. Cool, then cut into 1 inch squares and roll in confectioners sugar. Makes about 64 dainty squares

Day 4 of the 12 Days of Christmas Cookies!

Hello dear readers! Had a oh my goodness moment--nearly forgot to post the cookies for today! These are my dad 's favorite from when he was a kid--

Raisin Surprises (Filled Cookies)

3 cups sifted flour

3 teaspoons baking powder

1/ 2 teaspoon salt

2/3 cup butter
1 cup sifted brown sugar

1 egg, well beaten

1 tsp vanilla

1/3 cup milk

Sift flour once, measure; add baking powder and salt, and sift again. Cream butter thoroughly, add sugar gradually and cream together until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla; then add flour alternately with milk, a small amount at a time. Beat after each addition until smooth. Chill until firm enough to toll. Roll 1/4 inch thick on a slightly floured board. Cut with 2 1/2 inch cooky cutter. Place 1 teaspoon Raisin filling on a circle and place another circle on top, pressing edges together. Bake in a hot oven (425*) 6-8 minutes. Makes 4 dozen cookies.

Raisin Filling

3 cups raisins, chopped

2/3 cup sugar

2/3 cup boiling water

1 Tablespoon lemon juice

1Tablespoon butter

Cook raisins, sugar and water 6 to 8 minutes or until thick, stirring constantly. Remove from fire (tells you how old this recipe is!!); add lemon juice and butter.

Figs or dates may be substituted for raisins.

Dad said these are cookies that his mom would make every year for him. I think I may have to give them a whirl myself! LOL Going thru my mom's recipe box, I always know which recipes came from my paternal Grandmother--they are all on unlined index cards and typed! I don't think I could ever part with this recipe in particular, just for that reason!

Another one of Dad's favorites, also typed on a plain index card! are holly hermits. I remember my mom and I making a special batch just for him every year! I just realized, by doing this everyday, I am getting to share my Christmas memories with all of you! And that makes me very happy, and in a way, makes you part of my family as well, specially if you end up using one or more! of these recipes!!

Holly Hermits

1/2 cup shortening (although I am sure you could sub butter--or even lard??)

1 cup brown sugar

1 egg

2 Tablespoons water

1 1/2 cups sifted enriched flour

1/2 teaspoon soda (baking)

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon cloves

3/4 cup chopped mixed candied fruits and peels

1/2 cup seedless raisins, dark or light

1/2 cup broken walnuts

Cream together shortening and brown sugar. Add egg and water; beat well. Sift together dry ingredients; stir into creamed mixture. Stir in fruits and peels, raisins and nuts. Drop from teaspoons 2 inches apart on lightly greased cooky sheet. Bake in moderate oven (375*) about 10 minutes. Cool slightly before removing from pan. Makes about 3 1/2 dozen.

Day 3 of the 12 days of Christmas Cookies

Hello again dear readers! I am glad that you are enjoying all the cookie recipes I am sharing with you! Here is another family favorite--Brownie Drops! These are some of the best cookies ever! Be prepared to make more than one batch and to be asked for the recipe!! These are rich and fudgie on the bottom and crackled on the top like a meringue. These are a bit spendy to make, which is why they are a special holiday treat.

Brownie Drops

2 bars Bakers German Sweet Chocolate

1 Tablespoon butter

2 eggs

3/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup UNsifted all purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

3/4 cup finely chopped pecans

Melt chocolate and butter over hot water. Stir. Cool. Beat eggs until foamy; then add sugar, 2 Tablespoons at a time, beat until thickened (5 minutes on an electric mixer). Blend in chocolate. Add flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon; blend. Stir in vanilla and nuts. Drop by teaspoon onto greased baking sheet. Bake in a moderate oven (350*) until cookies feel 'set' when very lightly touched--about 8-10 minutes. Makes about 36 cookies.

These are sooo yummy and you must have a big glass of cold milk with them!

And here is a bonus candy recipe. These were one of my maternal Grandmother's yearly treats, and again one of my favorites! If you like Almond Joys, you will love these!! Also, very addicting! And be sure to store in the fridge after making as well. We used to use a large Tupperware canister (yellow one! oh so 70's!!) to store these in in the extra fridge in the garage.

Chocolate-Coconut Balls

candy

2 boxes powdered sugar

2 sticks margarine or butter

1 large package coconut

1 cup chopped walnuts

1 can Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk

Mix all above with hands. Roll into small balls and chill in refrigerator. Mix 1 large package chocolate chips and 1/2 block paraffin in double boiler. Dip chilled balls into chocolate mixture and put on waxed paper. Makes about 100 balls.

To help with the dipping, you could use a bamboo skewer or one of those curly que dipper thingys (oh so professional!) but my grandmother had a crochet hook that she would use for dipping these. In they would go, swirl around and pop! out onto the waxed paper lined cookie sheets!

I really enjoy sharing all these recipes with you! And I hope you try them and that they become family favorites of yours too! This is also an attempt to save these recipes, that they just don't disappear and are gone someday. Mayhap they will allow you to slow down a bit this crazy holiday season and make a batch or two with a loved one and share a memory of a past holiday.

Day 2 of the 12 days of Christmas Cookies!

Howdy Howdy!

Here is the second recipe in my 12 days of Christmas Cookies! These are another one of my favorites! I always waited for Christmas to come so we could make them, and I was always trying to sneak tastes of the batter! LOL You know, QA!

Date-Orange Balls

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter

3/4 cup sugar

2 eggs, beaten

2 cups sifted flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup chopped dates (use real dates, not the ones like come in the trail mixes)

1 Tablespoon grated orange rind

powdered sugar

Cream butter and sugar together. Beat in eggs. Sift dry ingredients together and add gradually to the creamed mixture. Fold in the dates and orange rind. Chill for at least one hour. Flour hands, break off small pieces of dough, roll into balls and place on greased baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven (375*) for 10-15 minutes. Toss hot cookies in a lunch sack with powdered sugar. Cool on rack. Makes about 45 cookies.

I truly loved these cookies... course, all of them are my favorites from childhood. In the house I grew up in, we had a huge counter in our kitchen that Mom and I would use to cut patterns out on, and wrap presents too! but when Christmas came around, it was the cookie baking station! Out would come the old Sunbeam mixer from the pantry, the bowls and measuring cups and spoons... the flour and sugar canisters would appear.... The recipe box would be consulted, cookie recipes would be chosen and the cookies would begin to be baked! Often, we would cover the dining room table with opened paper grocery sacks to cool extra cookies on, once the cooling racks were covered in the kitchen. Mom and I would do our major baking over 2 days, getting up around 6 am and going all day for about 2 days running. Always smelled so good in the house...

I remember one Christmas, during the sugar shortage in the 70's, Mom and I tearing sugar packets to make our cookies. Dad was a banker at the time and one of his accounts had been a restaurant that closed and we were allowed to go in an help ourselves to things in the pantry and larder before it went on auction. Dad got a couple, maybe 3? boxes of sugar packets and #10 cans of cocktail sauce and some other things, but I remember the sugar packets best. Gold and white Domino sugar packets, hundreds of them. LOL.

Kokas-Havrenkakor

(Swedish Coconut Oatmeal Cookies)

These were my Grandfather's favorites and we always made sure to make a batch!

1 Cup Shredded Coconut

1/2 cup butter or margerine

1 Cup packed brown sugar

1 egg, beaten

1Tablespoon vanilla extract

1 Cup quick cooking rolled oats

1/2 cup chopped nuts

Put coconut in a shallow pan and toast in a slow oven (325*F) until delicately browned. Stir occasionally. Cool and crush with a rolling pin. Cream butter. Add sugar and cream together thoroughly. Add egg and vanilla and beat until light and fluffy. Add oats, nuts and coconut. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased cooky sheet. Flatten with the bottom of a small glass dipped in flour. Bake in moderate oven (375*) 6-8 minutes. Makes about 4 dozen.

Today's the day!!

Hello dear readers!

NOW Live at Olde Primitive Peddlers!

YES!! I am finally 'Live' at Olde Primitive Peddlers! I am sooo thrilled to be their newest artisan! I ended up having 3 of the 4 items ready to go that I mentioned the other day--the ticking stars, the extreme prim angel and my BEAUTIFUL Prim St. Nick! Let me share with you what I have showcased at OPP--

Fun and quirky and kinda odd are my Vintage Button Stars. They are similar to my cutter quilt stars, but I wanted to do something different with them after I had stitched them up! I rummaged thru my yummy collection of vintage buttons and picked out my favorites, that were then stitched to the stars. Then I added a rusty safety pin to one, with a small rusty bell, 3 rusty bells to another, and a larger, single bell to the third! Also is the grouping are 2 muslin stars that I painted a few different shades of yellow, looking for the right 'mustard' shade and then they were sanded, stained, and rubbed with cinnamon. I think they would be fun scattered about, in bowls of fixings, on a shelf, with other pillows, even tucked into the branches of your Christmas tree!!

Also at OPP is one of my extreme primitive angels. She is long of limb and short of body and rather slender. My husband likes to call them Twiggers because they are so stretched out and thin. She is best displayed hanging, rather than sitting, as it shows her legs off and she does have a rather difficult time sitting. Lovely on your wall or hanging on your tree, is where she is happiest. She also sports a wire wrapped grapevine wreath, with 3 rusty bells to help you ring in the season! She has french knots scattered across her crown and has wings made from cotton batting. She is featureless, much like the dolls of old. Her clothing is also stitched in various shades of brown floss--which, to me, brings to mind the Mammas on the plains, making do with what they had on hand to make their family's Christmas festive and bright.

Lastly, but certainly not least, is my Primitive Black St. Nick. He is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS if I do say so myself. I am completely tickled with how lovely he turned out. He is 30" tall, made of muslin, stuffed with poly fil and rags, painted black, sanded, stained with my tea stain and rubbed with cinnamon. St. Nick's features are pinch stitched--eyebrows, nose and mouth, with hand stitched eyes, and a raw lambs wool beard that was needlefelted on. He is dressed in a coat made of plaid homespun, and trimmed in onasburg. His hood is made of green checked homespun, also trimmed in onasburg and his trousers are of black and gold flannel. His coat is finished off with 6 rusty safety pins with 6 rusty bells, and slung over his shoulder is a sack--with prim crows and candy canes! He would be perfect either hung on the wall or sitting in a special place--perhaps an antique child's rocker?? By the by, St Nick is made from a pattern by Threadbare Primitives--love her work!

Hello!!!

First off I want to say THANK YOU!!!! to everyone who has entered my giveaway and joined my blog! I just wanted to clear up a question that I have had from a few people--

There are 3 made with green ticking, with primitive black stitching, vintage buttons and rusty bits, as well as 2 mustard painted, sanded, stained and cinnamon-ed--is that even a word?? smaller stars. I think they would be wonderful as tucks or as ornies or even tucked into the branches of your tree.

Anywhoo, these holiday stars are made from ticking, both red and green, with stars made from cutter quilts that I made. The stars were heavily tea dyed as were the quilt stars. Christmas is in the air....

Well, it sure feels like it anyway! Had a sprinkling of snow over night and now I have a pot of stew on the stove bubbling away for dinner tonight with biscuits. YUM! I love this time of year for the soups and stews that make you feel all warm inside--

Been sewing up a storm this week and taking advantage of the sales at the fabric stores in town! Santa ornies, Whoo-ete ornies, Christmas Owls and snowmen galore! I really like how everything is turning out! The Christmas Owl is a variation on Whootie Who, who basically told me that he wants to help celebrate Christmas, so he is now sporting a primly stitched Santie hat with a rusty bell at the end! Just perfect to help celebrate the Holidays with you! I think he would be perfect tucked into a cabinet or displayed with your decorations or even on the tree! The Whoot-etes are inspired by Who's Who (he is a creation of Deb's at Paxton Valley Folk Art), and they are a bit pale at the moment! LOL but they will be soon painted and tea dyed and ready to hang on your tree! Now the Santa ornies--they will be a set of 3 with different colored hats--red, green and blue--with real wool beards, needlefelted on. The wool I am using is from Celeste Flanagan from Old Rustic Prims--and I love the fact that she tells you the breed and often the name of the ewe it came from! I think that adds such a neat touch to the wools as I use them! I have 2 Santas with their beards, and they are just waiting for their hats. I actually have two different styles in the works, as well as a Tomte version, and he will have a button tree! I have a slew of vintage buttons to use on his trees and I am itching to get started!

Well--on to the pictures!!

Here is Santa Whoot in his planning stages--figuring out his hat and size of the brim. And here he is all finished up! I am really pleased with how he came out! He has one rusty bell eye and a rusty bell on the point of his hat. His hat is stitched in place so it stays nice and neat.

And here are the one set of Santa ornies--- Without his beard and then with 2 of the 3 different types of wool that I am using for the beards.....

WIPs and More!

Happy Saturday dear readers!

Just got back from going to the pumpkin patch with hubby and my little boy! We picked the cutest punkin in the patch! He went in his punkin outfit and we got him his own little punkin--I will have to share photos!

As Halloween is beginning to wrap up, I am working on more turkeys and am well on my way on Christmas goodies. I have 2 different Santa head ornaments already started and more on the cutting table. I have promised my husband that I WILL finish Halloween and Thanksgiving before I get any farther on my Christmas items--so gotta get them turkeys done!! LOL So, with a little help and a bit of luck, I will be able to start on Christmas come Monday. Then, it will be all Christmas, all the time! We are finally having a nice cold snap in the air and have had frosty roofs the past week or so. It is supposed to be nice this weekend and then a big cold snap and rain! I am contemplating a BIG pot of Pumpkin and Sausage soup and biscuits for dinner here this coming week. Just the thought of it makes me warmer!

I have a small question to ask--I have changed up the colors and font of my blog to make it more in line with my Primitive theme and I am just curious what you think! Is it easier to read then the tiny type that was? ( I actually found on Blogger where to change up text and header colors and the like). Do you like the font? Let me know what you think! I have also started a selling blog as well, so expect to hear more about that as time goes on! Thought I would jump in with both feet and give everyone a third option of where to find my goodies on line. This was actually brought on by my Mother in Law who said that she couldn't leave feedback on Artfire with out joining and I thought why not just go ahead and try a selling blog as well? Since with a selling blog, you don't need to join a site (other than perhaps Google or Yahoo maybe--or PayPal) and you could purchase directly from me! Any thoughts on that score? OK... I will post this now, but I will be back with pictures soon of the pumpkin patch and my WIPS!!

WIP Wednesday 10/19/11

Hello my dear readers!

Well, here we are, Halloween a few days away with Thanksgiving coming quickly after, and Christmas far quicker than I want it too! I have been busy working on my Thanksgiving items, with my first one ready to share with you today. Here is Tommy Turkey and his Punkin! He is sooo cute and I am really, really happy with how he turned out! I have made him from vintage polished cotton from my mom's fabric stash, so I am guessing that the print is from the late 70's/early 80's--since that is about the time my mom stopped sewing. His tail is made from homespun that I bought earlier this year and his punkin is made from quilt quality cottons, bought from a local quilting store.The punkin is finished off with a felted wool leaf, a stem made from a twig I found in my yard and a rusty wire vine. Tommy also sports a felted wool wattle! Well, with no further ado--here he is in various stages along with his finished shot! He is getting ready for his pro shots for Etsy and then he will be up and ready to be shared with everyone!

So... here is Tommy, all put together, but no finishing touches... well he is put together, but he doesn't have his tail feathers, features or punkin yet!

Here is a close up on his beak. I decided that his beak was a little big for him, so I trimmed it down just a smidge. Next, Tommy is all finished. The next picture of him he is displayed with a punkin... but not his proper punkin! This punkin is one of my trio of punkins that hasn't been painted yet, but I wanted to see what he would look like!

Here he is with his proper punkin...but I thought he needed to be holding it instead of just having it sitting in front of him! And one final close up of Tommy Turkey showing you his oh so proper Punkin!

Ahhh! Feels so good to have all my Halloween items up in my stores! Now, on to Thanksgiving and Christmas! Yesterday, I was prepping so I can start cutting out new items today and possibly start sewing?? I have turkeys and snow men and santas and more angels and maybe a penguin or 2 in the works and I am sooo excited to see how they turn out! I just love this season! We had our first snow in the mountains over the past couple days and it makes me want to break out White Christmas and start making hot chocolate and listening to Christmas carols while I work. If I could have my way, and if my kids and hubby didn't think I had gone completely crazy, I would break out the tree and start decorating it now! It is never tooooo early for Christmas--am I right, or am I right??

I want to say welcome!! To my new blog members and I just wanted to let everyone know that I have a giveaway in the works! Check back and I will keep everyone posted! Talking about santas--I have a variety of sizes in the works--from ornaments for your tree, to one that is about 30 inches tall! And it is beautiful! I am so excited to get started--he is going to be just beautiful! And I have some stumpy Santas, tomte or nissas depending on if you are Swede or Norse! I will post pictures as time goes on! The snowmen are from ornie size to tuck in and around your home to ones giving ice skating lessons!

WIP Weekend 10/1-10/2

Happy Weekend dear readers!

I can't believe that September is gone and soon it will be Halloween! Pumpkins, bats, cats and witches hats will be the rule of the day! I have had a couple very productive days and I am excited to share with you what I have put together and that will be up on Etsy and Art Fire this weekend for you to enjoy! I have made several tiny cats, that I think would be perfect scattered around in a bowl, guarding your candy dish or maybe even in a display with tiny candy corns--which I also have! Another offering I have been working on is a collection fo different size/style candy corns, from not much over 2 inches, to over 7! And even a fat one--I thought those would be fun to decorate with and to scatter around for different effects. I have finished up some pillows and even a Halloween candle mat--my first--and I really am happy with how it turned out, so look for others to appear as time goes on. I also have some punkins to add as well! 1 set is just of small stuffed pumpkins and the other is one with a silly stitched on face, made from one of Deb's patterns over at Paxton Valley Folk Art I love her patterns! I have made Whootie Who from Deb's Who's Who pattern, Frost on the Punkin, and I am working on a snowman and there are a couple more that I want to pick up!

Some items in the wings that I am going to start this weekend, and since this IS a WIP post I can tell you about them, right?? I have some Turkeys for Thanksgiving, Santas of various sizes/styles, Mamma Dolls--I was soooo thrilled with how my Scare-die Cats came out I want to try the Mamma dolls to go with my Raggedy dolls, several ornaments, snowmen, angels OH MY!! Look for them to come in the next few weeks!! OH YES and to toot my own horn, I had my KandyKorn and Old Bats as well as my Primitive Leaves purchased in less than 24 hours from my Etsy store. THAT made me very happy! That was a happy dance for sure!!

And before I break out the pictures to show you what I have worked on this week, a little bit of on the homefront news! My little man has started cutting his first teeth! They came thru last night...he had been chewing on everything he could get his hands on, and he grabbed one of my fingers and shoved the knuckle into my mouth and I felt the tops of his little teeth poking through! Sooo neat! My little man isn't such a little man anymore! And so far, apples are his favorite food--we are making his food and I am really looking forward to meals and combining flavors--he has had sweet potatoes and did really well with them, so I am thinking about mixing some apples and sweet potatoes for dinner tonight.

Ok... On to pictures!

The little pumpkin pillow here on the bottom is pre-tea dying, and the fall pillow is after dying. The pumpkin is about that dark. The punkin just needs its stem and leaves and then it is good to go, and the candle mat just needs a place to sit--perhaps you know of a spot??

WIP Wednesday!

YES!! I finally have a WIP post on the correct day! Wednesdays, for some reason, seem to be my craziest day during the week! Hubby and I run errands mid week and we take Tae Kwon Do 3 times a week, one of which is today, and I seem to be on a constant run on Wednesdays--so I feel pretty darn happy that I am making a post today! Plus, Bean boy seems to be sleeping in today! Soooo I will type quickly!

Just a couple updates to what I showed you over the weekend and a few extra pics. Plan is tonight, after class, I will take my pictures and get things up on Etsy (finally!!!) tomorrow! I just want to have EVERYTHING done, but I am going to put up what I have done now and then add over the next couple days!

Ok... first off! Remember the Scare-die Cats I shared over the weekend? Well, I was doing a final grunge on one Cat and it decided to dive into my tea and spice mix and just get COVERED! I let it dry and I LOVED the look!! So, I am asking you, dear reader, to tell me which version you like best! The somewhat grungy one or the EXTREME grunge!

What do you think?? Which one do you like better?? Think is more prim-tastic! LOL I, personally, really like the extreme grunged one! I am soo happy with how they turned out, I am contemplating doing some Mama dolls! So look for them coming soon!

I have also been working on other kitties and kandy korns and even some bats!

I love this kitty! I love the HUGE nose and the little button eyes--it was supposed to have snaps, but I personally prefer the buttons instead. The little Kandy Korns need to be sanded and grunged and then they will be perfect for a prim holiday! Here are some fabric leaves that I finished up last night--I really like them too--I think they would be perfect tucked under some prim pumpkins or a bowl of fall fixins.

I am tickled with how well they came out! I think they look very realistic, and I am thinking about pinning them together with a rusty safety pin in groups of 4.

WIP Weekend

My how time flies!!

Things have been crazy here with the start of school--makes me think of the line from When Harry Met Sally when Harry tells Sally how fall makes him think of bouquets of sharpened pencils--that is how I feel! My daughter is a Junior this year, and the Bean Boy is trying to crawl--makes it fun and interesting with my crafting! But sewing and stuffing and painting I have been doing!! Let me show you!

Remember the 2 stars I was working on when we last met? Here they are complete!! I added vintage buttons to both and I think that was what they needed for that final touch! What do you think??

Here are some new goodies I am working on now and a few in various stages of being finished! Just about ready to get put up on Etsy as early as tomorrow! The owl is made from a pattern from Paxton Vally Folk Art, and she is in the 'nearly completed isn't she cute I can hardly wait to finish her stage!' and the Scare-die Cats are my own design! I am really happy with how they came out!

More works in progress--after all, this is a WIP post, right??

Bats, cats and pumpkins o my! And lots of paints and buttons and other fun things! I am sooo happy with how all my goodies came out! After painting, and after they were all dry, my wip's were sanded and stained with my cinnamon and tea blend and baked till dry!

A galaxy of stars...

Hello Dear Reader!!

I was thinking this week about what I should choose for my WIP posting, and I got to thinking about my ticking/cutter quilt stars, since for the most part they have consumed the majority of my work this week! To refresh your memory from my last post, I had torn a bunch of red, green and red/white/blue fabrics for my stars and I was working on my cutter quilts--here are a few pictures of what I came up with in my quilty thoughts--

Here they are quilted up! I used my free motion foot to do the quilting with--I thought that the randomness of the stitches really added to the 'primness' of the cutter quilts. I could just imagine a mom on the farm hurriedly stitching up a quilt to keep her family warm, wishing for the time and resources to create a master piece, such as a Baltimore quilt, and dreaming of the time when life would slow a bit so she could ply her needle at her craft.

Then, after stitching the cutter quilt sections, I traced the smaller star on the back of the cutter quilt pieces to make them more random in shape and fabric placement. Here are some of the red, green and patriotic stars after they were cut out and are ready to sew onto the ticking stars!

Here the ticking stars with the patchwork stars stitched on, waiting to be tea-dyed--

Here they are after being dunked in my tea-dye solution, waiting to be baked to prim perfection! I like to use a rather strong solution of tea and I bake my items at 200 degrees, turning every 10-15 minutes or so, until dry. I like to lay drier pieces against ones that are still damp to get water marks, as if they had been in a chest or box that had gotten damp over the years.

And, last but not least, here are the stars, baked and cooled and ready to fly to new homes!

I hope you have enjoyed a peek into my creative process, as much as I have enjoyed sharing it with you! I will be adding these very soon to my Etsy and Artfire sites!

WIP.....Thursday!

Good morning!!

I was reading Deb's blog-- Paxton Valley Folk Art and she had a Watcha Doing Wednesday post, and I tried to get a WIP post done for yesterday, but didn't quite make it so it is Work In Progress Thursday! LOL!! I have been burning the midnight oil between caring for my little boy and taking tae quon do classes and taking care of my family and I have some fun new things I have been working on! I thought I would also share some of my sewing room too! Here is a pair of owl wings from Who's Who, an owl pattern designed by Deb of Paxton Valley Folk Art that I am in the process of stitching up!

I love the look of cutter quilts on prim items and while I love the look, I am loathe to cut up antique quilts, so I make my own! I just tear up strips of fabrics and utilize my scraps to make them. I am working on Christmas stars made from green and red ticking and here are piles of torn fabric to make the cutter quilts for the stars--

Cutter quilt ideas--I love playing around with the strips--do I do planned combinations or just let them happen as they may??

Here are a couple of finished ticking stars, just waiting to be tea stained and dried--and waiting especially to spend Christmas with you!!

Besides these Christmas stars, I am working on Halloween and Fall items--candy corns, black kitties, pumpkins, stuffed leaves, acorns and other items too! Lots of sewing, stuffing, painting and decorating going on here! I heard geese honking the other morning as they flew over and I knew at that moment, fall was on its way! Here are a few fall items I am working on right now--along with the stars!

Wonderful Weekend!

I hope that everyone had a fantastic Independence Day weekend! We did--my parents were in town and we had a very nice visit and we celebrated with beer can chicken--my first time making in it and it was wonderful--but a tad messy to serve!! as well as Carrot, Pea and Bean salad, that was one of my favorites from childhood. Realized this morning that I should have had my camera nearby to take pictures! I will next time!

Talking of pictures, I promised you, dear reader, some new pictures for my Etsy store and well, with taking care of a Bean Boy, time goes much faster, and I don't seem to have as much as I did before he was born--so don't give up on me! They are still in the works! They should be taken and up this week--I am making a concerted effort to do just that, especially since I want to get going on my Christmas in July offerings and my fall items as well! I was going to talk about my new fall goodies, but I think I will wait until I have pictures....

New items in the works!

Well, it is getting late, but here I sit, working on new goodies for my shop. Husband is sleeping, bean boy is snoozing--well at least for a few hours until it is time for the midnight feeding and dd is chatting with friends on Facebook.....

Back to me! My new project of the moment is knitted carrots, prim style! Knit from wools and wool blends, they grow organically from my needles, each unique and special unto itself. They are between 6 and 7 inches, with the tops adding another 4 inches or so. They will be just perfect sitting on a bowl on your table, or in a harvest display! Look for the listing and pictures soon! They will be joining other harvest/summer goodies that are on the work table!

Talking about pictures, can I hear a chorus of ughs? That is how I feel about my pictures of my creations for my Etsy store. *sigh* So, while I am taking pictures of darling wool carrots, I will be taking all new pictures of all my items. I followed some tips that were given to me about how to take better pictures, and well, the advice fell flat, so I am going to try some new ideas with how to set them up and see how that goes! I seem to have had better luck with normal daylight light, instead of the fancy lighting I had tried that gave my items an 'off' cast. You can see what I mean by taking a peak at the pictures posted here--some nice and bright and clear and others with an ugly yellow cast, that I am not pleased with. So new ones will be done--nice and fresh!

Getting back into the swing of things...

VERY long time, no posting!!

Where have I been, you may be asking yourself... well I had my baby boy March 19th! I took a substantial maternity leave to get ready for my baby boy and after he was born.. and I am itching to get back to sewing!! Before I went on my maternity leave, I made up several doll bodies and I am putting the finishing touches on them--hair, finishing facial features--and making dresses for them. I have really missed sewing and now that the Bean sleeps for longer stretches, I can hear my sewing machine calling my name and I know I can get some work done while he sleeps and plays in his gym.

I am also working on some more/new stitcheries... love those little pillows and sweet wall hangings--keep an eye on my Etsy store for new goodies. I haven't opened up just yet--I will soon though! I will be having a Christmas in July sale in my store that I am really looking forward to--I love Christmas--it is truly my favorite time of the year--and I will be playing Christmas music to get my dollies in the mood for the holidays. It may be 90+ degrees outside my window, but it will be snowflakes and hot chocolate inside!!

Happy Cyber Monday!!
This weekend, I got some of my new items added to my Etsy store, and I am soo pleased with how they turned out! Prim stars, grubby candy canes, an angel Annie and a bunny too! Also added a lovely embroidered Liberty Angel pillow... going to be adding more items today! I have decided that after all the coffee stained items, and tea stained items I have made over the past bit, I really prefer the tea staining... to me that the tea is a warmer tone then the coffee... Well here are a few pictures.. Enjoy! Be sure to check back later, as I will be adding more things as the week and season progresses!

As the leaves turn...

Where has the time gone??? Summer did NOT turn out the way I had planned! We had an emergancy surgery shortly after my last post, and then right after, I found out I am expecting!!! So crafting got left a bit in the dust with all the excitement around here! But, I am back on track with my sewing!

As I sit here, listening to Christmas music and watching the leaves on the oak just outside my sewing room window, smelling the (decaf) coffee brewing, I am putting the finishing touches on my little Annie Angels, the dolls themselves at least! Their angel dresses, made of tone on tone muslin, are coffee dye-ing right now, and then I will pop them in the oven for drying. They will have little crinolines made from the same tulle that I used for my daughter's prom dress--Darling! I am also working on my other ornies and tucks as well... I have ticking stars with quilted stars stitched on with black threads, sets of graduated stars for tucking into those special holiday spaces, fabric candy canes to display with the stars or grace your tree, gingerbread and snowmen ornies, as well as embroidered ornies. Such fun! I also have some larger Annies all dressed and pressed and ready to share your holidays with you!

Also in the works, I have mug rugs, some quilted pieces and some knitted goodies--Oh My!

The Summer Cometh!

Or is here, rather! Wow how time flies! I have been away from making my little goodies since I made my daughter's prom dress! Sent my machine in for service after and just haven't been able to sit and sew--but I am back at it! I am working on items for my Christmas in July sale! The plan is to add Christmas items between July 14th and 17th. Be on the lookout for ornies, bowl fillers, dollies and stitchery/quilted items! I am so excited to bring these new fun things to you!

I will post more this week about the sale! Stay tunned!

Easter is on its way!

Today, 3 large bunnies complete with carrots are hop, hop, hopping into my Etsy store! They are sooo excited to come see you! Bunnri Etta is just about 14 inches tall, with button eyes and embroidered features. She has 3 different dresses with aprons to match and loons and she would love to show you, and she might even add more, because she just can't make up her mind!

One dress is dark navy blue with bouncing bunnies all over it, with a light blue and cream ticking apron. Her next choice is a pink dress with a pink and cream striped apron, with dark pink roses, and her third dress is a creamy yellow linen dress with flowering vines. The apron with this dress is a green floral stripe on a cream background. She even has another dress that is a pale green with chicks on it and she may just show up in that one as well! Can you help her choose?

Also joining Bunnri Etta is a darling blond doll named Anna. She has blond hair and she is dressed in a light blue floral dress with a darker blue ruffle and a yellow apron--she looks like she just arrived from Scandinavia! Actually, she was inspired by my watching the cross country skiing during the Olympics. She is just as cute as the dickens, and she is just about 12 inches tall.Anna's features are drawn with archival inks and sports a painted nose! Each strand of her blond hair is knotted on by hand.

A couple other dolls that are also joining in the fun are Suz-Anna and Jeenie-Ann. Both of these girls have wool felt noses, stitched on with black cotton thread and button eyes. Each strand of their hair is hand tied and knotted. Suz-Anna is dressed in a sunflower dress with a yellow pinafore and has hand painted striped socks and black shoes! Jeenie-Ann is dressed in a blue and peach floral dress with a peach pinafore. She has hand painted striped socks as black shoes as well, complete with ties!

To round out this spring gathering, is Itty-Bitty Bunny. She is just about 7.5 inches tall (ears not included) with facial features drawn on with archival inks and painted. She is dressed in a light yellow floral dress with a peach print apron. She is just the sweetest thing to tuck into a basket or sit on a shelf or peek from a cupboard.

I had finished up 4 little annies yesterday, and in 5 minutes after I listed the first one on my Etsy site, she was gone! That was little Springtime Annie! Wow!! Then, after I had posted the other 3, the person who purchased Springtime Annie convo'ed me to see if she could also purchase Irish Annie! So that was a very happy dance moment, to say the least. We have had several nice convos back and forth, and they are getting their suitcases packed and getting ready to move to their new home in Tennessee.

Saint Patty's Day

Saint Patty's day is just around the corner, and the shamrocks have sprung into bloom at Buttons in the Attic! I have 4 different ones to choose from--one that is made of green and cream ticking that has a vintage 80's accent piece in the center and then I did 3 conversation shamrocks--right along the lines of the conversation hearts I did for Valentine's day. I am really happy how they turned out and tomorrow I should have a number of Raggedy Ann's to add to the site, as well as one Raggedy Anna who has dropped by for a visit from Sweden! She is dressed in a light blue dress that sports a dark blue ruffle with a yellow and blue print apron. I created Anna while I watched the cross country skiing during the Olympics last month, and I KNOW she would just love to come and stay at your house and spread some international cheer!

Easter is getting ready to hop around the corner, and I have several treats to share--patchwork eggs, bunnies of different shapes and sizes and more dollies! Be sure to check back and see what I create next!

Spring is starting to peek around the corner

Even though they are predicting snow for this week here in Northern Nevada, I can feel the tinglings of spring in the air. Spring is also starting in my Etsy shop! I have added a few little sewn converstation hearts and little hearts that are 'buttoned up"! The hearts are sewn from fabric I have bought new and fabrics that are from my stash, and could be considered vintage at this point! They are sewn from Nanny Goat Primitives patterns and I think they came out perfectly! They are sooo cute, and would make the perfect little something for your Valentine or loved one. They would be so darling tucked into a bowl or peeking out of a basket. And while Valentine's day IS Sunday, they would still make a wonderful sentiment for a special someone any day of the year!

I will be adding more things to my Etsy Store here over the next few days and weeks as Spring starts to 'sprung'. Check back often! Till next time!

Getting started!

Welcome to Buttons In The Attic! Here I am striving for lovely handmade prim items, such as handcrafted dollies of my own design and others, stitcheries, ornies and needful things. I also plan on show casing my 'Plain Jane' soaps. Nothing Plain Jane about them, though! They are unscented soaps, but beautiful just the same.
